Matrescence

There's a word for becoming a mother.

Matrescence (ma-TRES-ence / noun)

The process of becoming a mother.

It’s a profound change that goes far beyond pregnancy and birth. It is a word to capture what a new mother is learning. How to care for someone else while, at the same time, adjusting to changes in her own body, relationships, routines, priorities and sense of self.

Some of it is joyful. Some of it is exhausting. Much of it happens quietly.

And while we celebrate the arrival of a baby, the person becoming a mother can sometimes disappear into the background.

We think she deserves to be noticed too.

That idea sits at the heart of Hey Mama.

Our gifts recognise the moments, roles and small achievements that make up this extraordinary transition. The night feeds, the endless remembering, the learning as you go, the things nobody teaches you and the things nobody else necessarily sees.

Not because motherhood needs another set of expectations.

Simply because sometimes it’s good for somebody to say:

We see what you’re doing.

That’s Hey Mama.
