The Village

It takes a village.

It’s an old saying, but a good one.

When a baby arrives, suddenly there’s a whole new little person in the world. Everyone wants to meet them, hold them, buy them something and ask how they’re doing.

Quite right too.

But somewhere in all that excitement is Mum.

Often feeling tired. Finding her feet. Working things out as she goes along and getting used to a life that suddenly looks very different.

That’s where the village comes in.

Partners, grandparents, sisters, brothers, good friends, nice neighbours. The people who turn up, check in, make you laugh, bring something round or simply remember to ask how you are doing.

Of course, villages look a little different these days.

Families don’t always live around the corner. Friends can be scattered all over the place. Life is busy and sometimes the people we care about most are the ones we assume are doing just fine.

Which makes the little things matter.

A message. A brew. Something left on the doorstep. Ten minutes of company. A reason to laugh. Someone who understands that changing the bedding can feel like the best thing ever. A small reminder that somebody was thinking about you.

Nothing grand.

Just people looking out for people.

We rather like that idea.

And we think Mum deserves her village too.
